Closed nasal fracture reduction is a non-surgical procedure to realign nasal bones following an injury, usually done within 14 days of the fracture. Most nasal fractures occur during sports or minor falls. The procedure realigns a freshly broken nose without external incisions.
If done within ten to fourteen days of the injury, we carefully manipulate the bones back into position under local anaesthesia while the patient sits in the clinic chair. A short course of internal splints and external tape then follows to maintain alignment. Swelling usually settles within a week, and breathing often improves immediately. Delaying this beyond two weeks turns what should have been a twenty-minute clinic procedure into a formal septorhinoplasty that requires a general anaesthetic.
