Otolaryngology Clinic in Singapore

Where ear, nose or throat problems abound, patients deserve an otolaryngology clinic in Singapore that combines genuine expertise with the latest evidence-based ENT treatments. At Barrie Tan ENT Head & Neck Surgery at Gleneagles Hospital on Napier Road, we have more than 20 years of experience in simplifying complex problems into straightforward solutions for adults and children.

In-Clinic Day Surgeries

Many conditions that once required general anaesthesia and an overnight stay can now be managed under local anaesthesia or light sedation in the day-surgery suite right here at our clinic in Gleneagles Hospital. Our team includes ENT specialists and consultants trained in various subspecialties to provide comprehensive care for all ear, nose and throat conditions.

While major procedures like complex cancer surgery and cochlear implantation are hospital-based, some minor procedures are handled without the hassle of full hospital admission at our clinic. Barrie Tan ENT aims to provide individualised care to help you feel better.

Allergy and Rhinology Services

Our clinic offers allergy testing and treatment plans for complex nasal allergies and related conditions. We manage chronic rhinitis and structural nasal issues through procedures such as septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and nasal cryotherapy, providing more than just simple medical management. Our goal is clear: identify your environmental and allergic triggers and provide the best treatment for lasting symptom relief.

General Ear, Nose and Throat Services

We cover a wide range of ENT conditions that affect your quality of life. This includes managing issues from chronic ear infections and hearing loss to persistent sinus issues and nasal allergies. We offer medical and surgical solutions, as well as guidance on managing chronic conditions in the head and neck region to restore function and comfort.

Paediatric ENT Care

We offer services specifically designed for children. This includes common paediatric ENT conditions such as recurrent ear infections, developmental hearing loss, and disordered breathing caused by enlarged adenoids or tonsils. Our treatments include ventilation tube insertion (grommets) and minimally invasive adenotonsillectomy. Across treatments, we always prioritise the child’s comfort and their long-term health outcomes.

Sleep Disorders

Our clinic offers a comprehensive approach to sleep-disordered breathing, including diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as sleep apnea. Treatment options range from lifestyle and medical management to advanced solutions like positive airway pressure (PAP) devices, custom-fit oral appliances, and specialised sleep surgery to modify the upper airway and improve your sleep.

otolaryngology clinic closed nasal fracture reduction

Closed Nasal Fracture Reduction

Closed nasal fracture reduction is a non-surgical procedure to realign nasal bones following an injury, usually done within 14 days of the fracture. Most nasal fractures occur during sports or minor falls. The procedure realigns a freshly broken nose without external incisions.

If done within ten to fourteen days of the injury, we carefully manipulate the bones back into position under local anaesthesia while the patient sits in the clinic chair. A short course of internal splints and external tape then follows to maintain alignment. Swelling usually settles within a week, and breathing often improves immediately. Delaying this beyond two weeks turns what should have been a twenty-minute clinic procedure into a formal septorhinoplasty that requires a general anaesthetic. So if you have a nasal fracture, seek help quickly.

Endoscopic Adenoidectomy

Endoscopic adenoidectomy is a procedure to remove enlarged adenoids through the nose using a small camera, ensuring complete and precise tissue removal and avoiding external scars.

This procedure is usually for children who struggle with persistent mouth breathing, snoring or chronic glue ear, though we occasionally use this approach for adults with chronic sinusitis. The whole process is done under light general anaesthesia in our day-surgery unit and takes about 30 minutes. Importantly, the recovery is quick: most children are eating ice cream that same evening and back to school in 2-3 days. The endoscopic technique is crucial as it provides much better views than older curettes and reduces the risk of recurrence and bleeding.

Epistaxis Treatment

Epistaxis treatment involves identifying and cauterising the source of bleeding in the nasal cavity to stop a severe or recurrent nosebleed. The procedure handles both minor bleeds near the front of the nose (anterior) or more troublesome bleeds deeper (posterior).

For visible vessels, we first apply a local anaesthetic spray and then use targeted cauterisation with silver nitrate or bipolar diathermy in the clinic. If a patient has recurrent or persistent posterior bleeds, we may need to insert nasal packing, such as rapid rhino balloons or increasingly perform targeted endoscopic cautery of the sphenopalatine artery under light sedation.

Nasal Cryotherapy

Nasal cryotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses freezing temperatures to reduce the size of the turbinates, improving nasal airflow and chronic congestion. Cryotherapy uses a thin probe to deliver nitrous oxide, freezing overactive nasal nerves or swollen turbinates at minus 80 degrees Celsius.

Some patients come in with a chronic runny nose or persistent congestion that has not responded to nasal sprays. After one 5-minute session, done under a topical anaesthetic alone, they often see a dramatic improvement. This technique is also very effective for patients with allergic rhinitis who have not found relief with conventional treatments. The probe is passed along the nasal floor, and patients usually feel only coldness and mild pressure, nothing more. The results become apparent over the next 2 weeks as the inflamed tissue shrinks.

Retained Grommet Tube Removal

Retained grommet tube removal is a simple procedure to remove a ventilation tube that has stayed in the eardrum longer than expected or has become slightly embedded in the eardrum tissue.

We perform the procedure in the clinic under the microscope, using a topical phenol anaesthetic for comfort. The tube is loosened and lifted out in seconds. If needed, a tiny paper patch is placed over the eardrum site. Hearing improves immediately, and parents leave feeling relieved that a general anaesthetic was not required for this minor procedure.
